Cancer risk alert: Essential lash glue facts for boss ladies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Youdle) - As the popularity of eyelash extensions continues to grow, it’s important to be aware of what you’re putting near your eyes. A recent study published in American Contact Dermatitis Society (2022) highlights a concerning issue: formaldehyde in eyelash glues. This chemical, known to be a carcinogen and a potential cause of allergic reactions, has been found in both over-the-counter and professional eyelash glues, even when it’s not listed as an ingredient.

What is Formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is a chemical often used in industrial processes and as a preservative. However, it has no place in your beauty routine, especially not near your eyes. Long-term exposure to formaldehyde has been linked to various health issues, including allergic contact dermatitis and, more seriously, cancer.

The Study Findings

The study examined 37 different eyelash glues using the Chromotropic Acid Method (CAM) to detect formaldehyde. The results are eye-opening:

  • Consumer Eyelash Glues: Out of 17 tested, 4 contained formaldehyde, including 2 that did not list the chemical as an ingredient.

  • Professional Eyelash Glues: 15 out of 20 tested positive for formaldehyde, despite none declaring it on their labels.

Why This Matters

The presence of formaldehyde in eyelash glues is concerning, especially since it can lead to serious health issues. Even at low levels, formaldehyde can cause irritation, redness, and swelling around the eyes, which can be uncomfortable and unsightly. More importantly, prolonged exposure increases the risk of more severe health problems.

How to Protect Yourself

  1. Check Labels Carefully: While not all brands disclose the presence of formaldehyde, it’s still essential to read ingredient lists carefully. Look for products that explicitly state they are formaldehyde-free.

  2. Choose Safer Alternatives: Opt for eyelash glues that are known to be free of harmful chemicals. There are several brands on the market that prioritize safety and transparency.

  3. Stay Informed: Keep up with the latest research and recommendations from trusted sources. Awareness is key to making safer choices.

When it comes to your health and beauty, it’s crucial to be informed about the products you use. The findings of this study highlight the need for greater transparency and safety in the beauty industry. By choosing formaldehyde-free eyelash glues and staying informed, you can protect yourself from unnecessary risks.
